Boat sinks in Long Lake
7/18/2009
Early Saturday afternoon, a 20' ski boat sank on Long Lake in Lake Orion. The cause of the accident was an overloaded bow. The excess weight caused by too many passengers in the bow allowed a wave to enter the boat. The added water weight caused the boat to eventually sink and capsize. The boats built in floatation kept the hull just above the surface of the water making recovery much easier. Local residents helped get the boat upright and returned it to shore. Some of the boats pollutants were seen in the lake after the accident. The Oakland County Marine Patrol was dispatched to aid in the recovery efforts. All of the appropriate safety equipment was on board during the time of the accident. Luckily, no-one was hurt during the incident.
Please let this be a warning to other boaters – properly distributing weight in your watercraft is imperative to boating safety.
